How to get your bill reduced

4 min read

Find out when your deal ends, check what new customers are offered, then call and ask for the retentions team. Mention how long you've been with them and any better quote you've found, and get the new price in writing. Or let your simp make the call and push for the better rate.

What you can do yourself.

Every provider works differently, so treat these as what usually works rather than what always does.

  1. Step 1Know when your deal ends

Check your contract or fixed deal end date. Once it ends, you're often moved to a pricier rate.

  2. Step 2Check the going rate

Look up what new customers are being offered, so you know what a good price looks like.

  3. Step 3Ask for retentions

Ask for the retentions or cancellations team. They usually have the best offers.

  4. Step 4Make your case

Mention how long you've been a customer, that you pay on time, and any cheaper quote you've found.

  5. Step 5Check exit fees

If you're still in contract, ask about early exit fees before agreeing to anything.

  6. Step 6Ask about social tariffs

Some broadband and phone providers offer cheaper deals to people on certain benefits. Ask whether you qualify.

  7. Step 7Get it in writing

Have any new price and its end date confirmed in writing before you hang up.

The catch: none of this guarantees a lower price. Some providers won't move, and it can take more than one call.

How a simp does it.

Alex's electricity bill went up to £94 a month. Alfie called, asked for retention and got a new price fixed for twelve months, confirmed in writing.

Tell it your number. It makes the case.

Tell your simp who to call and what you pay now. It asks for retention, makes the case, and reports back with what it was offered.

What it can't doYour simp doesn't pretend to be you, and it doesn't pass security checks for you. It never gives out your passwords, PINs or security answers. It won't agree to anything you haven't said yes to.What your simp is allowed to do
Good to know

If they need the account holder, you take over.

Some providers will only discuss the account with the account holder. If they do, your simp gets you to the right team, and you tap Take over in the Simp app.

Questions about lowering your bill.

Will my simp agree to a new deal without asking me?

No. Your simp asks you before it agrees to any new deal or price. You can mark any detail as sensitive, and your simp asks you every time before using it.

What your simp is allowed to do
What if they ask for security details?

You tap Take over in the Simp app and answer them yourself. It never gives out your passwords, PINs or security answers.

What your simp is allowed to do
Which bills can it help with?

Energy, broadband, phone, insurance and subscriptions: anything where you can call and ask for a better price.

How AI calling works
Does it use my AI minutes?

Yes. The whole call counts towards your monthly AI minutes, time on hold included. Your simp waits on hold for up to 6 minutes, then lets you know so you can take over. You can top up in the app if you run low.

Let your simp ask for the better rate.

Every plan comes with a simp that makes the call and tells you what it was offered.
