Is AI calling legal?

In the UK, yes. Having an AI make an ordinary call for you, about your own affairs, is legal.

What matters is how it's done: it doesn't pretend to be a person, it doesn't cold-call anyone, and it only says what you've allowed.

Hi, you're speaking to Poppy, Alex's simp. I'm calling on his behalf.

The rules

Honesty

The rule

You can't deceive someone about who they're dealing with.

Your simp

It never claims to be you, it always says who it's calling for, and it says it's an AI if asked.

Unsolicited marketing

The rule

Automated marketing calls need the person's consent first.

Your simp

It can't make marketing calls. It only rings numbers you've approved, about your own affairs.

Nuisance calls

The rule

Phone lines can't be used for silent, repeated or abusive calls.

Your simp

Every call is one you set up and approved. It can't dial in bulk, so it can't flood anyone with calls.

Personal data

The rule

Personal details have to be handled lawfully and kept safe.

Your simp

It only shares what you've allowed. You can mark any detail as sensitive, and your simp asks you every time before using it.

Disclosure

Every call opens with your persona's name and who it's calling for, and it never claims to be you.

Simp sets this by the rules of the country the call is made in, and in the UK every simp works this way.

On request
It says it's an AI whenever someone asks it directly.
Ask if it's an AI and it says yes.
It never claims to be you.

Hi, you're speaking to Poppy, Alex's simp. I'm calling on his behalf.

Recording

Three different things, with three different answers.

Your calls

Not recorded

Your simp's calls are not recorded. Afterwards you get a transcript and a summary of what was said and agreed.

Listening in

Live, not saved

You can listen while a call is happening. It's streamed to you as it goes, and nothing is left once the call ends.

The calls on this site

Recorded, with consent

The calls you can play here were recorded with everyone's agreement and are labelled; every word is as it was said.

Your transcript and notes stay in your app for 30 days. While Help improve Simp is on, a copy with your details taken out may be kept for up to 12 months to improve Simp. It starts on, and you can turn it off in the app.

Calling

No. It never calls without your say-so.

AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Muse can request a call, but only you can approve one, call by call or as your say-so given in advance on a plan with autonomous mode.

  • It never calls without your say-soA call waits for your go-ahead, or follows your say-so given in advance, as rules you set for your AI apps, on a plan with autonomous mode.
  • Repeating calls are approved onceWhen you set the series up.
  • Always from a Simp numberNever from your own number, and it never disguises where the call comes from.
  • Not a bulk diallerIt only rings numbers you approve. It can't work through a list or dial in bulk.
  • Calling hoursYour simp only calls between 8am and 9pm, in the time zone of the person or business it's calling. Calls to a toll-free number follow these hours in your own time zone.
Sharing

Only what you've allowed. You decide what your simp may share, what it has to ask you about first, and what it never gives out.

It never gives out your passwords, PINs or security answers.

Their choice

That's their right. Some people would rather speak to a person, and that's fine. Your simp doesn't argue or try to talk them round.

It ends the call politely and tells you in the call summary, so you can pick it up yourself.

  1. Step 1They say noThey'd rather not speak to an AI.
  2. Step 2Your simp ends the callPolitely, without pushing.
  3. Step 3You hear about itIt's in the call summary, so you can call them yourself.
Can someone use Simp to make scam calls?

No. Every call needs an account holder's approval, goes out on a Simp number that can be traced to that account, and can't pretend to be a different number. It only rings numbers the account holder approves, so it can't be used to dial in bulk.

Does the person I'm calling have to agree to speak to an AI?

No. Your simp introduces itself by name and says who it's calling for. If they ask whether it's an AI, it says yes. Anyone can take or end the call as they would any other.

Can my simp pay for things?

Card details are only given out on a call you approved first.

Who hears the call?

You, if you choose to listen live, and the person on the other end. Your persona is the only AI on the line.

Is this the same in the US and Canada?

Not quite. In the US and Canada, a simp says it's an AI at the start of every call, and each country has its own page and its own terms.

Every plan comes with an AI number of your own, and a simp to answer it.

This page explains how Simp works. It isn't legal advice.
